The Lodge of Science and Art, No.8429 is proud to participate in the United Grand Lodge of England Universities’ Scheme and welcomes applications for membership from Loughborough University undergraduates, postgraduates, alumni and other members including staff.

The Universities’ Scheme was introduced in 2005 by the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales with the objective ‘To establish and/or enhance arrangements and opportunities for undergraduates and other university members to enjoy Freemasonry’.

As of 2017 there are over 65 Lodges situated across the UK, where towns and cities have a university, which have been authorised to participate in the Universities’ Scheme.

Headed by the Scheme’s President the Assistant Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Sir David H Wootton and supported within the Province of Leicestershire and Rutland by the Provincial Grand Master R. W. Bro. David V. Hagger, the Universities’ Scheme has provided the Lodge of Science and Art with the opportunity to represent and establish a link with the Loughborough University in order to promote Freemasonry to the academic community.

Whilst the age limit for joining Freemasonry is normally 21 years, this is reduced to 18 years when the applicant is applying to join a Lodge participating in the Universities’ scheme.  In addition, reduced fees are charged to those aged under 25.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies which teaches moral lessons and self-knowledge through participation in a progression of allegorical plays. It offers its members an approach to life which seeks to reinforce thoughtfulness for others, kindness in the community, honesty, courtesy in society and fairness in all things. Members are urged to regard the interests of the family as paramount but importantly Freemasonry also teaches and practices, concern for people, care for the less fortunate and help for those in need. It also offers the opportunity of meeting a wide variety of people from the local community in a very sociable environment.

If you are a member of the Loughborough University, whether student or staff, and wish to know more about Freemasonry in general or you wish to make enquiries about joining the Lodge of Science and Art No. 8429 then please contact the Lodge Secretary at secretary@scienceandart.co.uk
